[Kensblog] Testing the use of video in my blog entries – Flying Kenmore Air

Greetings all!

I want to experiment with including some video in my blog entries this summer. This is just a quick test of some poorly hacked together video that I shot recently while traveling home from the boat on Kenmore Air. This was strictly a test to see how the video would look on Youtube, and how it would appear in the blog entry.

So … don’t expect much…. I spent perhaps 10 minutes on editing, and it shows…

My plan is to take the drone with us to the boat and try to get some cool footage. That said … I’m always worried that I’ll send the drone crashing into the water and reluctant to take running shots. If I ever lose communications with the drone it will return to where it was launched. This is fine when launching from land, but on a boat which is running, it doesn’t work out so well…

Roberta and I are planning to be on the boat cruising our way north along the British Columbia Canadian coast through July, August and into September. We’re not at all sure where we’ll be or how long we’ll cruise, but are certainly looking forward to it!

Enjoy!

Ed -- I will never forget how tense it was trying to run in those waters.

Thank you!!!!

PS I just heard the lost sailors have been found and are dead. Horrible! I feel so bad for them and their parents.

Hi Ken! I'm new to your blog, but I just finished reading your book "The Great Siberian Sushi Run", which I had bought on my Kindle. Anyway, I had just read chapter 35 of "GSSR" two days ago, where you discussed your approach to Tokyo and to the Yokohama Bayside Marina. Specifically, you described in no uncertain terms how crazy the freighters maneuver in such congested waterways around Tokyo. Then yesterday, I read in the news of that freighter which collided with one of our Navy's destroyers in those waters, which took the lives of seven of our brave servicemen. Its almost as if you had foreseen this tragedy eight years ago. Weird.

Anyway, I loved "The Great Siberian Sushi Run", and looking forward to reading "Crossing an Ocean Under Power"!
Safe travels, Ed Ruppenthal

I saw that! They did a terrific job. I posted a message to them and haven't heard back. It brought back a lot of memories!

Yup -- the engineer is scratching his head over that one now. We'll get it fixed! Thanks.

Good question!

I don't think so .. or, at least I hope not!

Great with video! Let me tell you what happened to me when flying the drone on an atlantic crossing. First of all - this was my first drone, I considered myself quite experienced, and I had all the newest software on the DJI Phantom 2 drone. Wonderfull day, 1250 miles off The Canaries, 1500 to Antiqua. Launched the drone while the boat was doing 8 knots. I got some wonderfull shots flying along, in the front, hign etc. I saw all the beautifull footage ln my phone while shooting. Then on returning to the oat, as tried many times before I came in to the aft deck to land the drone in my hand. And when it was about 8-10 feet from my hand it mysteriously stopped any forward motion. Obviously the boat kept moving, we were navigating to a route, I could move the drone up, sidewards etc, but it could not go forwards. So I spun it around and attempted to back up to the boat. No Go! It was as if it ran into a wall. By now the boat had moved quite far away from the drone, so I asked another crew to turn the boat and go back.
Unfortunately at that moment, I lost contact from the controls to the drone, so it gave the 4 blinks on all lamps, went high to the preprogrammed heigth of 30 meters. And although I had the dynamic home active (so the drone theoretically should return to the position of the controls and not to the take off point) it decided to go back towards the original point of lift off...
We were now at l'Adagios max speed of 12.5 knots chasing the drone which at its cruising speed of 20 M/sec - ~40 knots - was racing away. We saw it stopping hovering over the original point of take off blinking and slowly, but elegantly, landing on the water. 6000 meter at that point.
What had happened was that the software had a predefined max radius from the original point of take off. A cylinder that would limit the flying area, i guess was supposed to protect from the flyaways many people talked about in those days.
Anyway... Now I fly the new version of the DJI... :-)

Ken,

Video plays great and voice comes through very clearly too. I''m using my
Android Samsung Verizon hot spot connected wirelessly to the Lenovo Yoga.
It came through at 480p I think in auto. My cell 4G Lte is marginal here
in Skyline.

Maybe we''ll see you and Roberta along the BC coast somewhere.

Thanks Jim -- that was the purpose of this test ... to find those sorts of compatibility issues.

I already noticed a few things I want to fix ...

1) The "full screen" link .. when used on the blog entry (as opposed to when people view the video on youtube) does not work.. or, at least not on Chrome

2) At the end of the video it displays a list of recommended videos . .. none of which have to do with boating (at least on my screen) ... I believe I can fix that...

Technology is SO much fun...

Hi Ken -

Not sure if you wanted a QA response but: my iMac 2014 with macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6 Beta (release 6) work just fine. Clicked the email video tag and auto-launched Safari into youtube and played the video without problems.

Look forward to your future Blogs. Take Care,
